Idle Hands Micro Joystick is a cute joystick that looks like a prize from a capsule toy machine. When you try it out, it works pretty well as a joystick, and its fast response means arcade games work just fine.
This is a designed for the Apple II series. It connects directly to the DB9 socket on the Apple IIe / IIc. For Apple II / IIplus, the our separate adapter “DB9 Joystick 2 Plus” ( https://en.infinityproducts.co.jp/product-page/a-joystick-adapter-ic-plug-to-db9 ) is required.
Kit options:
- Standard Kit ($45) – Includes all electronic parts plus a 3D-printed shell case for easy assembly.
- Economy Kit ($35) – Includes electronic parts only (no case). An STL file is provided so you can 3D print your own case.
- Fully Assembled($53) – Fully assembled and tested production version.
Joystick shell files:

Bruce Rayne from Branchus Creation made a video on assembling the joystick.
Assembly precautions:In the video, he demonstrates how to adjust the capacitance by adding or removing capacitors. This process is fairly simple for those who understand how it works, but it does require soldering and desoldering, which may be challenging for enthusiasts who are not familiar with using soldering and desoldering tools. If you don’t enjoy this kind of hands-on work or feel it’s too much trouble, you can purchase a fully assembled version instead, and you can play right away!
The joystick unit's plastic bag have labels like 224 or 254 (0.22 µF / 0.25 µF), which indicate the ideal measured capacitance for each axis. That capacitance value will vary depending on the individual joystick unit. However, once assembled, the actual value almost always shifts. You can adjust the behavior by adding or removing capacitors. The center position is adjusted with the trimmer pot.
Please read the included instruction manual for instructions on how to adjust the capacitance and center position appropriately.
Please note that the center position of this joystick is set to a slightly larger value due to the specifications of the 10K ohm joystick unit used. If this is not acceptable, please note that this joystick unit is not suitable for you.
Some people think that the center position must be perfectly aligned, but in reality, even if the center position is a slightly larger number, when you play the actual game, you can confirm that the character you are controlling in the center will stop and face each direction correctly. This is important.
We've written many precautions to help you avoid failure, but the bottom line is that we designed this for you to enjoy. Have fun building your Idle Hands Micro Joystick!
